Coach Andrew Kurzawski, BA, M.Div. NETA CPT is the founder and head basketball trainer / strength coach of Gym Rat Performance Training. He is currently the assistant women’s basketball coach (recruiting coordinator) at Point Park University – an NAIA scholarship institution in Pittsburgh, PA.
He has coached over 30 NCAA, NAIA, USCAA All American players in both men’s and women’s basketball. Kurzawski is known for his tremendous teaching ability and attention to detail in skill development. He has gained a reputation in the Pittsburgh area as one of the finest post player skill coaches blending a mixture of footwork and strength training into his summer lessons and workouts. During the summer of 2018 he Kurzawski and his Gym Rat PT staff worked with members of the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball program (Jonathon Milligan & Jared Wilson Frame) as well as recent Deon Baker (St. Francis – Loretto) and Josh Dombrosky (California University of PA) to prepare for professional combines – both men were offered combine spots with Baker signing a professional contract to play for Father Matthew’s in Ireland.
He has also worked extensively as a strength and performance trainer having spent time during his graduate studies learning from the Pittsburgh Steelers training staff at their annual summer camp in Latrobe, PA as well as with numerous college and high school teams. He ran the D1 basketball training program in Pittsburgh via the D1 Sports Training Company where he also assisted in soccer training for the Pittsburgh Beading Soccer Club. Kurzawski has also headed basketball training for the Western Area YMCA in the Greater Pittsburgh area. He has also worked alongside NCAA Division 1 coach Patrick Sandle (Formerly of the University of Pittsburgh, current Assistant Coach at Loyola Marymount University) teaching skills clinics in the Pittsburgh area for the Pittsburgh CRONS AAU organization.
Kurzawski was a standout player at Carlynton high school in Carnegie, PA where he started 4 years on the varsity team and was a multiple time selection to the district’s fabulous 15 team. He was also a member of the prestigious Pittsburgh JOTS AAU team and received multiple scholarship offers to play college basketball. He graduated from St. John’s University (Queens, NY) in 2007 with a degree in pre-law (philosophy) and completed a Master’s of Divinity degree from St. Vincent College and Seminary in 2012 where he also assisted the men’s and women’s basketball program’s as a graduate assistant particularly working with players for off-season and in season skill development.
Coach Obiecunas brings to the Gym Rat Performance Training program over 15 years’ experience in high school coaching most notably at Keystone Oaks High School as a head girls varsity coach and at Peters Township High School as an assistant boy’s coach (under legendary WPIAL Head Basketball Coach Rick Bell.
Obiecunas has also coached at the Catholic Middle School levels via St. Thomas More School (Pittsburgh, PA) where he served as school athletic director. During his time at STM he helped elevate the Tiger program as one of the best in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Coach Obiecunas has also worked under legendary Blackhawk High School Coach John Miller via his Drill 4 Skill AAU origination and skills clinics.
This past season he served as an assistant girls basketball/skill trainer coach at Rochester High School. The Rams went on to win their first WPIAL (District 7) Class A title and qualified for the PIAA State Basketball Tournament.
Coach Tom specializes in basketball IQ dynamics, shooting instruction, ball handling and guard development training.
Coach Obiecunas is a graduate of Keystone Oaks High School. He completed his undergraduate studies in elementary education at Duquesne University and his master’s degree in counseling also at Duquesne University.
Kylie Owoc is a Certified group exercise instructor with the National Exercise Trainers Association. She is also a former NCAA Division 2 and NAIA collegiate basketball player. Kylie was a standout duel sport athlete (soccer and basketball) at Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, PA.
Kylie teaches our Gym Rat Performance Training Bootcamp at Amerifit Fitness Center in Greentree / Mt. Lebanon - Thursdays at 5PM.
Kylie works for the Trib Live High School Sports Network both in front of and behind the camera after completing her communications degree from Carlow University. She also works at General Nutrition Center (GNC) while pursing her Masters Degree from Point Park University.
Julia Cipollone is a ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Trainer and holds a BS in Exercise Science from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Julias is working on becoming an Occupational Therapist. Julia always had a love for sports and played different sports throughout her whole life. She attended Seton La-Salle high school where she played basketball and soccer.
Even though she did not play for a women’s team at IUP, she participated in intramural sports. Julia’s passion for fitness grew even more after high school. After her high school sports career was over she wanted to continue to stay fit and active. Her goal was to challenge herself and to be the best version of herself.
She had shadowed Coach Andrew Kurzawski and he had helped her grow a love for strength training. Julia is a ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer. Her goal is not only to challenge herself, but to also challenge others and help them meet their goals.
Coach Jake St. George is a Ganon Baker Certified Player Development Specialist. He is a former collegiate basketball player (Carlow University) where he played point guard and was one of the first players in the history of the school's mens basketball program. Prior to his collegiate playing days he stared at Central Valley High School winning a WPIAL District 7 Title in 2014.
Coach Jake has a background in youth, high school and collegiate player development and specializes in guard play. He currently coaches at Carlow University.
